As we all know search engines are the most known web traffic generating tools in the internet. When we write words or phrases for example, in the Yahoo! search box we are expecting to get results showing pages that match our interests. By using search engines we discover new web pages and media matching our criteria. But what really lies behind the little box with the button? The soul of a search engine is mainly composed of three vital components: the algorithm, databases and mechanism for indexing usually called crawlers, spiders, robots or just bots. Algorithms read databases trying to find possible matches to keywords that the user wrote. While crawlers or spiders are the ones who crawl the web for new additions to the database that the engine uses to show results.
The idea of search engine optimization is making your site friendlier to crawlers so it scores higher in the page ranks gaining more chances of being discovered by people surfing the internet. SEO (search engine optimization) for a particular crawler can vary dramatically from one another due to search engine algorithms differing from each other drastically. What is really a good SEO tactic in Yahoo! can be useless to an extent or even counter productive in other search engines like MSN or Google . Optimizing for a crawler in particular, although some webmasters use this practice most of the time for marketing purposes, could limit potential traffic from other crawlers. Learning a little of the search engine algorithms at least those of the most commonly used engines (Yahoo!, Google and MSN ) is crucial to learning SEO and will help you balance your site so it is appealing not only for a particular crawler but to the most possible creating a true search engine friendly site and obtaining traffic from different engines over the internet. Higher web traffic can theoretically translate in to higher revenue rates for your web page. As a general rule SEO gets your site listed in the search engines, helps you obtain a better page rank, drives more traffic to your site and assuming you are starting in your journey to make money online, drives more cash to your pockets.
