AdSense earnings are greatly affected by ad unit location. Most of the time, ads with greater visibility are the ones that will obtain the best click through rates. When I launched Some Extra Pennies about a month ago, I was using AdSense as a source of revenue. I have used the very same theme since then, but was noticing really low click through rates especially from traffic from social media and book marking sites. Even following Google’s recommended AdSense placement, I was suffering from really bad conversion problems in this blog. Then, I decided to experiment a little with ad units and placement, conversions improved around 30% with some minor changes. I no longer use AdSense in this blog, since I am planning to use it in future projects that will surely benefit more from it. My decision to switch from AdSense to Adbrite for this blog was more influenced by Adbrite’s ability to sell ad space. Ad space selling does really well in informative and news blogs.
The examples that follow can be applied to most Adsense type networks including Adbrite. Here are some illustrations that were published In Google’s own AdSense blog, they represent their recommendations based on general facts and performance studies. Remember these are just some general guidelines. Experiment yourself until you find your killer combination.
In blogs:

As illustrated, blogs tend to benefit most from units in between posts and between posts and before the comments sections. Side bar wide scrapers have been reported to do really well on blogs to as always experiment yourself with different locations to see which do better for you.
In forums:

Top left side bar spot is marked as the best ad location followed by before and after posts.
In traditional web sites:

AdSense in traditional web sites tend to benefit from top left placement but ads just on top of content have the hottest spots.
Remember that these are general guidelines, your results could and probably will vary. To many ads and your visitors will bounce of screaming for mercy, another reason why I modified the current theme I use. Careful balancing is the key I would say.
